FORMER HOUSING SECRETARY SHAUN DONOVAN APPLAUDS BIDEN-HARRIS ADMINISTRATION FOR TAKING ACTION TO ADDRESS SYSTEMIC DISCRIMINATION IN HOUSING
During his time as Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), NYC Mayoral Candidate Shaun Donovan strengthened and codified policies to promote fair housing and to protect Americans from discrmination.
The Trump Administration reversed those policies, repealing HUD’s ability to affirmatively further fair housing and cleared the way for housing discriminiation across the country. President Biden’s recent directive is the first step toward correcting these injustices and ensuring that New Yorkers — and all Americans — are protected from discriminatory housing practices.
NEW YORK, NY — Former Obama-Biden Housing Secretary and Budget Director Shaun Donovan today applauded the Biden-Harris Administration’s recent directive to examine the Trump Administration’s disastrous and discriminatory housing policies, paving the way to address historical injustices suffered by the African-American community and others with regards to fair housing. The directive, signed by President Joe Biden earlier this week, would also implement standards and policies created under HUD during former Secretary Donovan’s tenure.
“For more than 50 years, the Fair Housing Act has helped fight discrimination in mortgage lending, zoning restrictions that prevent people from being able to choose where to live, and local landlord abuses. During my tenure as HUD Secretary, I stood shoulder to shoulder with Joe Biden and Barack Obama to strengthen and codify these principles in order to protect New Yorkers — and all Americans — from discriminatory housing practices,” said NYC Mayoral Candidate Shaun Donovan. “Tragically, the previous administration recklessly repealed a number of the policies I created, opening the door for housing discrimination in New York City and beyond. I applaud the Biden-Harris Administration for reversing this injustice and setting us on the path to leveling the playing field and building more equitable communities. As Mayor, I look forward to continuing to work with President Biden and others to ensure that discrimination in housing is a relic of the past.”
President Biden’s Memorandum on Redressing Our Nation’s and the Federal Government’s History of Discriminatory Housing Practices and Policies directs the current HUD Secretary to examine the effects of several of the Trump Administration’s policies related to Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing and the Disparate Impact Standard. Following that examination, HUD is further directed to take necessary steps to implement the Fair Housing Act’s requirements in a manner that affirmatively advances fair housing and HUD’s overall duty to prevent unjustified discriminatory housing practices.
As Mayor of New York City, Shaun is committed to fighting discrimination in housing and other areas, as well as reimagining public housing and prioritizing the needs of city residents. Leveraging his deep relationships with the Biden-Harris Administration, he will work to bolster federal funding for public housing and implement housing policies that respect and expand tenant choices, create good jobs for a broad spectrum of New Yorkers — including Black and Brown residents — and address the neighborhood disparities that structural racism and past housing policies have produced.
