SHAUN DONOVAN CALLS ON DE BLASIO, CITY GOVERNMENT TO DO MORE TO COMBAT SPATE OF HATE CRIMES AGAINST ASIAN AMERICAN NEW YORKERS
In response to an apparent surge in harassment and violence towards members of New York City’s Asian American community, Mayoral Candidate Shaun Donovan has called on Mayor de Blasio and his administration to take increased action in order to protect Asian American New Yorkers.
NEW YORK, NY — Earlier this month, New York City Mayoral Candidate Shaun Donovan spoke out against a disturbing act of violence perpetrated against an Asian American New Yorker at a Manhattan subway station. Unfortunately, this is just one of the latest in a long series of acts of violence against the Asian American community in New York City and across the country, a trend that has increased alarmingly since the beginning of the pandemic and further harmed a community that is among the hardest hit by the virus. Today, Donovan called on Mayor Bill de Blasio and his administration to take further action to protect Asian American New Yorkers from this hate and violence.
“The Asian American community is one of New York City’s greatest strengths. Our city, and our entire country for that matter, has benefited greatly from their contributions,” said NYC Mayoral Candidate Shaun Donovan. “Tragically however, this vibrant community has had a target on its back since the beginning of this pandemic, made worse by racist and xenophobic rhetoric being spewed by former President Trump and others. Beyond verbal harassment, we have seen an up-tick in physical violence being carried out against our fellow Asian American New Yorkers, and we must call these despicable acts for what they are: hate crimes.
“As I’ve stated many times before, NYC’s diversity is our greatest strength and these disgusting acts not only harm individuals and communities, but are also attacks on our city itself. I am encouraged to see that New York City’s Asian Hate Crime Task Force has taken these matters seriously, but more must be done. It is critical that Mayor de Blasio speak out forcefully against these attacks and do more to ensure that Asian American New Yorkers feel safe on the subways, in our streets, and in all communities.”
