SHAUN DONOVAN ISSUES STATEMENT ON THE RESIGNATION OF NYC SCHOOLS CHANCELLOR RICHARD CARRANZA
NEW YORK, NY — Today, New York City Mayoral Candidate Shaun Donovan issued the following statement regarding the abrupt resignation of New York City Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza, as well as the appointment of his successor, Bronx Executive Superintendent Meisha Ross Porter:
“I want to first thank Chancellor Carranza for his dutiful service to our city and its children, as well as offer my deepest condolences to him and his family as they deal with the unimaginable loss this pandemic has inflicted on them and their loved ones,” said NYC Mayoral Candidate Shaun Donovan. “As Chancellor, Richard was a champion for our city’s most vulnerable students, working tirelessly to increase diversity in our public schools and ensure that all students, regardless of their zip code, had equal access to a quality education. Wherever life may take him next, I’m confident he will continue his work of making our city and our country more equitable.
“Although I am saddened to see Richard go, I am excited that his successor, Bronx Executive Superintendent Meisha Ross Porter, shares his same commitment to equity and creating success for all of our city’s students. Meisha’s historic appointment serves as a shining example of the type of talent our public school system can produce, and I am hopeful that the current Mayor will work closely with her to ensure that children in the Bronx and every borough of our great city can reach the heights she has achieved.”
