SHAUN DONOVAN ISSUES STATEMENT ON U.S. SURPASSING
500,000 COVID-19 DEATHS
NEW YORK, NY — Today, New York City Mayoral Candidate Shaun Donovan issued the following statement regarding the U.S. COVID-19 death toll surpassing 500,000 deaths:
“Earlier this week, our country reached a tragic milestone, with COVID-19 deaths exceeding 500,000 nationwide, including nearly 30,000 of our fellow New Yorkers,” said NYC Mayoral Candidate Shaun Donovan. “These aren’t just numbers—these were our family, friends, and neighbors. These were our loved ones and our colleagues. These were people that made our city vibrant and bright, and whose abrupt absence makes everything seem that much darker. I know we are tired, but there is light at the end of the tunnel, but it’s going to require the vigilance of every single New Yorker to get there. We cannot let this colossal loss of life be in vain.
“The city’s current administration and the next one must work with experts, community organizations, health care providers, and private organizations to formulate a bold strategy to help our communities recover and rebuild from this nightmare. We must ensure equitable vaccine distribution across our city and get help to the people who have been the hardest hit by this virus. And we must use this crisis as an opportunity to create a new health care system that is more accessible, efficient, and prepared to meet our health needs now and for years to come.”
Shaun Donovan recently unveiled his nearly 7,000-word healthcare platform, which lays out his vision to swiftly and effectively overcome the pandemic and make New York the healthiest city in the world by improving the standard, accessibility, and affordability of health care for all New Yorkers, regardless of race, ethnicity, income, or immigration status. The plan also outlines a three-tiered New York City public option, integrates high-quality primary care facilities to the 15 Minute Neighborhoods model, and addresses environmental determinants critical to living a healthy and active life.
